Using a familiar user interface (e.g. Outlook), employees are able to view each other's availability and over which channels dialogue can be established. It is possible to start interacting and cooperating effectively based on the communications channel best suited to the situation. Interaction is not dependent on whether you are in the office, in your home office, or out travelling. This represents a level of flexibility that many employees want to exploit.

A laptop PC can function as a phone, with the same phone number and services as at a fixed workstation. Mobile integration is also a potential aspect of such solutions, whereby a combined mobile and WLAN phone is used for all voice and message services (IM, e-mail, IP telephony and availability notification).
